Environmental Protection and Carbon Abatement for Power Generation
COURSE OVERVIEW:
The meaning of environmental protection and carbon abatement for power generation refers to the suite of engineering solutions and operational strategies designed to minimize the ecological footprint of electricity production while aggressively reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This course focuses on the technological shift from "Unabated" fossil fuel combustion to "Clean Power" paradigms, incorporating advanced filtration, flue gas treatment, and carbon capture technologies. By integrating these solutions, power producers can ensure compliance with stringent air quality standards while contributing to national and global climate targets.
The scope of this training covers the management of air pollutants—such as NOx, SOx, and particulate matter—alongside the treatment of process water and the handling of combustion by-products like coal ash or gypsum. It examines the technicalities of "Carbon Abatement" pathways, ranging from thermal efficiency improvements and fuel switching to the deployment of large-scale Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS). The course provides a deep dive into the regulatory drivers, such as the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) and carbon pricing mechanisms, that dictate the economics of environmental protection in the utility sector.
Coverage includes the analysis of "Negative Emissions Technologies" (NETs) and the role of biomass with carbon capture (BECCS) in achieving deep decarbonization. The course addresses the critical challenges of water scarcity in power generation and the implementation of dry cooling and zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) systems. Participants will gain practical expertise in selecting the most cost-effective abatement technologies and developing long-term environmental compliance strategies that balance grid reliability with environmental stewardship.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Identify the primary environmental pollutants associated with different power cycles.
- Design flue gas desulfurization (FGD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems.
- Quantify the carbon intensity of power generation assets using standard protocols.
- Evaluate the technical feasibility of post-combustion and pre-combustion carbon capture.
- Implement efficiency-based carbon abatement strategies in thermal power plants.
- Manage the environmental risks of waste heat and thermal discharge into water bodies.
- Design zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) systems for power plant water conservation.
- Assess the potential for Carbon Utilization (CCU) in industrial applications.
- Navigate the requirements of the EU ETS and other carbon trading schemes.
- Utilize continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) for real-time compliance.
- Formulate a technical roadmap for transitioning to low-carbon fuel sources.
- Analyze the life cycle environmental impacts of power generation technologies.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is designed for Power Plant Managers, Environmental Engineers, HSE Directors, Regulatory Compliance Officers, Utility Strategists, and Sustainability Consultants in the power and energy industry.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
