UPS and Batteries: Operations, Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Repairs
| 08 – 12 June 2026, Abu Dhabi | 26 – 30 Oct. 2026, Sharm El Shaikh |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
The heart of any backup power system is the synergy between the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) electronics and the energy stored in the battery bank. This course provides a technical deep dive into "Power Storage and Conversion," focusing on the critical link between electronic inverters and chemical energy cells. Participants will explore the mechanics of "Battery Management," learning how to optimize charging algorithms to prevent sulfation, thermal runaway, and premature capacity loss in various battery chemistries.
The scope of this training addresses the advanced diagnostic techniques required for "Component-Level Troubleshooting" in both the UPS unit and the battery strings. It covers the technical nuances of "Impedance Testing" and "Discharge Profiling," focusing on the identification of "weak cells" that can cause the failure of an entire string during a utility outage. The curriculum provides a detailed focus on "Repair Strategies," ensuring that participants can safely replace fans, capacitors, and contactors, as well as manage the replacement of individual battery blocks without compromising system safety.
Coverage includes the implementation of rigorous "Safety Standards" for high-voltage DC systems. Attendees will learn to utilize "Infrared Thermography" to detect high-resistance battery inter-connects, analyze "Event Logs" to reconstruct failure scenarios, and perform "Load Shedding" configurations to extend autonomy during emergencies. By combining electrical engineering, power electronics, and industrial chemistry, the course equips professionals with the expertise required to maintain secure power assets at peak reliability.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Define the "Chemical Principles" of Lead-Acid and Lithium batteries.
- Identify the signs of "Battery Degradation" (Swelling, Leaks, Corrosion).
- Execute "Battery Impedance" and "Conductance" measurements.
- Perform "Discharge Testing" (Load Bank) and capacity analysis.
- Troubleshoot "UPS Inverter" and "Rectifier" stage failures.
- Replace "DC Bus Capacitors" and "Cooling Fans" safely.
- Implement "Battery Management System" (BMS) configurations.
- Manage "Floating" and "Boost" charging cycles correctly.
- Troubleshoot "Static Bypass" and "Control Logic" errors.
- Conduct "Infrared Surveys" of battery inter-cell connections.
- Execute "Safe Battery Replacement" in a live or bypass system.
- Document "Asset Health Reports" and repair history logs.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is intended for Electrical Maintenance Technicians, UPS Specialists, Substation DC System Engineers, and Facilities Reliability Personnel.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
