Transformer Pre-Commissioning Tests and Energization Procedures
| 11 – 15 May 2026, Sharm El Shaikh | 05 – 09 Oct. 2026, Abu Dhabi |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
The transition from a newly installed transformer to a live grid asset requires a rigorous sequence of technical validations. This course provides a technical framework for "Pre-Commissioning Testing," focusing on the verification of insulation integrity, electrical ratios, and protection integration. Participants will explore the mechanics of "Field Diagnostics," learning how to execute tests that confirm the transformer has not sustained internal damage during installation and that all auxiliary systems are fully functional.
The scope of this training addresses the end-to-end commissioning process, from "Cold Testing" to "Final Energization." It covers the technical nuances of "Functional Interlocking," focusing on the verification of Buchholz, pressure relief, and temperature protection paths. The curriculum provides a detailed focus on "Energization Protocols," ensuring that participants can manage the risks of inrush current and system stability during the critical moment of first power application.
Coverage includes the implementation of "Vector Group" and "Phasing" verification to ensure compatibility with the wider network. Attendees will learn to utilize "Secondary Injection" for relay verification, conduct "Oil Breakdown" tests on-site, and manage the "Step-by-Step" restoration of substation auxiliary power. By combining theoretical electrical engineering with practical field commissioning, the course equips professionals with the expertise required to bring power transformers online with absolute safety and technical precision.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Define the "Pre-Commissioning Checklist" for power transformers.
- Identify "Phase Relationship" and "Vector Group" configurations.
- Execute "Turns Ratio" (TTR) and "Excitation Current" tests.
- Perform "Winding Resistance" measurements on all tap positions.
- Conduct "Insulation Resistance" and "Dielectric Absorption" checks.
- Verify "OLTC" functionality and automatic control logic.
- Execute "Buchholz" and "PRD" functional trip testing.
- Perform "Bushings CT" ratio and polarity verification.
- Conduct "Oil Quality" checks (BDV, Moisture) at the site.
- Execute "Stability Tests" for differential protection schemes.
- Manage "Energization Sequences" and inrush monitoring.
- Document "Commissioning Certificates" and handover files.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is intended for Commissioning Engineers, Substation Technicians, Project Engineers, and Quality Control Inspectors involved in new substation developments.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
