COURSE OVERVIEW:

The delivery of electrical energy from the point of generation to the end consumer is one of the most complex engineering feats in modern society. This course provides a technical overview of the "Three Pillars" of the power system: Generation, Transmission, and Distribution, focusing on the infrastructure and physics that link them. Participants will explore the mechanics of "Energy Conversion," learning how mechanical energy is transformed into high-voltage electrical power for long-distance transport.

 

The scope of this training addresses the full lifecycle of a kilowatt, from the synchronous generators in a power plant to the low-voltage transformers on a neighborhood street. It covers the technical nuances of "Grid Topology," focusing on the importance of "High Voltage" for efficiency and the role of "Substations" in voltage regulation and protection. The curriculum provides a detailed focus on the components of the network, including turbines, conductors, insulators, and protective relaying systems.

 

Coverage includes the implementation of basic load-balancing strategies and an introduction to "Smart Grid" technologies. Attendees will learn to identify different "Substation Configurations," understand the purpose of "Step-Up" and "Step-Down" transformers, and explore the fundamentals of "System Control" through SCADA. By combining an overview of engineering equipment with the operational logic of the grid, the course equips professionals with the expertise required to navigate the broader electrical utility industry.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Define the primary components of a "Total Power System."
  • Differentiate between "Thermal," "Hydro," and "Renewable" generation.
  • Explain the role of the "Synchronous Generator" in frequency control.
  • Identify the advantages of "High Voltage" (HV) for long-distance transmission.
  • Distinguish between "Transmission," "Sub-transmission," and "Distribution" levels.
  • Describe the function of "Step-Up" and "Step-Down" transformers.
  • Identify different "Substation Busbar" arrangements (Single, Double, Ring).
  • Explain the purpose of "Circuit Breakers," "Isolators," and "Earthing Switches."
  • Define "Primary" versus "Secondary" distribution networks.
  • Describe the role of "SCADA" and "Load Dispatch" centers.
  • Identify the causes of "Voltage Drop" and "Line Losses" in the grid.
  • Explain the fundamentals of "Protection and Control" in power delivery.

 

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is intended for New Utility Engineers, Technical Project Managers, Non-Electrical Managers, and Maintenance Personnel seeking a broad system perspective.

 

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

 

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
