Maintenance and Troubleshooting of UPS Systems and Battery Power Supplies
| 02 – 06 Feb. 2026, Dubai | 23 – 27 Nov. 2026, Abu Dhabi |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
In the era of digital infrastructure, the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) serves as the ultimate safeguard for critical data, medical life-support, and industrial process control. This course provides a technical deep dive into the power electronics and electrochemical storage systems that ensure continuous energy delivery during grid disturbances. Participants will explore the complex transition from AC to DC and back to AC, focusing on the stability and quality of the output waveform.
The scope of this training addresses the full range of UPS architectures, including "Off-Line," "Line-Interactive," and "Double-Conversion" systems. It covers the technical nuances of inverter technology, static bypass switches, and the integration of diverse battery chemistries such as VRLA, Ni-Cd, and Lithium-Ion. The curriculum provides a detailed focus on the battery management system (BMS) and the thermal management requirements that dictate the longevity of the energy storage bank.
Coverage includes the implementation of rigorous testing protocols, such as "Load Bank" testing and internal resistance measurements of battery cells. Attendees will learn to interpret UPS alarm logs, identify incipient capacitor failures, and troubleshoot "Transfer to Bypass" events. By combining theoretical power conversion science with practical maintenance workflows, the course equips professionals with the expertise required to manage the high-availability power assets that protect their facility's most sensitive loads.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Define the primary functions and components of a modern UPS system.
- Differentiate between "Single-Phase" and "Three-Phase" UPS architectures.
- Analyze the operation of the Rectifier, Inverter, and Static Bypass.
- Identify the advantages and risks of different battery chemistries (Lead-Acid vs. Lithium).
- Perform "Impedance" and "Conductance" testing on individual battery cells.
- Execute a controlled "Battery Discharge Test" using a load bank.
- Interpret "Harmonic Distortion" and its impact on UPS performance.
- Maintain UPS cooling systems and manage "Thermal Runaway" risks.
- Troubleshoot common UPS faults, including "DC Bus Overvoltage" and "Overload."
- Calibrate the UPS monitoring and communication interfaces.
- Implement a "Predictive Maintenance" program for aging capacitor banks.
- Ensure compliance with international standards for critical power (IEC 62040).
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is intended for Electrical Maintenance Technicians, Data Center Facilities Engineers, UPS Service Technicians, and Hospital Facility Managers.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
