Distribution Overhead Transmission Line Equipment

08 – 12 June 2026, Abu Dhabi31 Aug. – 04 Sep. 2026, Dubai

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Overhead distribution lines form the primary link between substations and the end consumer, necessitating a robust understanding of the mechanical and electrical components that ensure service continuity. This course provides a comprehensive examination of the hardware and equipment utilized in overhead systems, focusing on the materials and designs that withstand environmental stress and electrical faults. Participants will explore the engineering of poles, conductors, and insulators, learning how each component contributes to the overall structural and dielectric integrity of the distribution network.

The scope of this training addresses the technical specifications and installation requirements for a wide array of line equipment, including cross-arms, stay-wires, and vibration dampers. It covers the mechanical principles of sag and tension, emphasizing the importance of correct conductor stringing to prevent physical failure under varying weather conditions. The curriculum provides a detailed focus on the protection and switching devices mounted on overhead structures, such as auto-reclosers, sectionalizers, and surge arrestors, providing a framework for creating a resilient and maintainable network.

Coverage includes the interpretation of line construction standards and the implementation of maintenance protocols for aging infrastructure. Attendees will learn to identify early signs of hardware fatigue, insulator tracking, and wood pole decay through systematic inspection techniques. By combining mechanical load analysis with electrical performance criteria, the course equips professionals with the expertise required to manage overhead distribution assets that are safe, reliable, and compliant with international utility standards.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Identify all primary components and hardware used in overhead distribution lines.
  • Differentiate between wood, concrete, and steel pole characteristics and applications.
  • Select appropriate conductors based on ampacity, weight, and environmental factors.
  • Analyze the dielectric properties and selection of porcelain, glass, and polymer insulators.
  • Calculate conductor sag and tension for various span lengths and temperatures.
  • Implement effective grounding and lightning protection for overhead structures.
  • Describe the operation and installation of pole-mounted transformers.
  • Configure and maintain auto-reclosers and sectionalizers for fault management.
  • Select and install surge arrestors to protect equipment from voltage transients.
  • Identify and mitigate the causes of conductor vibration and galloping.
  • Conduct comprehensive visual and thermal inspections of overhead line assets.
  • Implement safe work practices for the installation and maintenance of live lines.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is intended for Overhead Line Technicians, Distribution Engineers, Maintenance Supervisors, and Safety Officers involved in the design and upkeep of distribution networks.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
