Advanced Overcurrent, Distance, and Differential Protection Testing with CMC
| 13 – 17 Apr. 2026, Abu Dhabi | 07 – 11 Sep. 2026, Abu Dhabi |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
Modern power systems rely on the precision of numerical relays to isolate faults and protect multi-million-dollar assets. This advanced course focuses on the practical application of the OMICRON CMC test set to verify the complex logic and settings of Overcurrent, Distance, and Differential protection schemes. Participants will move beyond basic pick-up tests to perform comprehensive secondary injection, exploring how to simulate realistic fault conditions and transient behaviors to ensure relay dependability and security.
The scope of this training encompasses the technical nuances of various protection philosophies, including the coordination of inverse time curves and the configuration of distance zones for transmission line protection. It provides an in depth look at transformer and busbar differential schemes, emphasizing the importance of current transformer (CT) polarity, ratio matching, and harmonic restraint. The course is designed to provide hands-on mastery of the Test Universe software, enabling technical personnel to create automated test plans that are both rigorous and repeatable.
Coverage includes the interpretation of fault records, the verification of communication-aided schemes, and the testing of specialized functions such as power swing blocking and switch-on-to-fault (SOTF) logic. Students will analyze the impact of CT saturation and secondary burden on protection performance, learning how to model these variables within the CMC environment. By bridging the gap between theoretical protection settings and field verification, the curriculum ensures that protection engineers can confidently certify that a relay will operate correctly under every conceivable fault scenario.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Operate the OMICRON CMC hardware and Test Universe software proficiently.
- Create automated test modules for complex numerical protection relays.
- Verify Overcurrent and Earth Fault (50/51) timing and pick up characteristics.
- Test Distance (21) protection zones using R-X diagram plotting.
- Validate Differential (87) protection for transformers, including vector groups.
- Simulate fault transients using the "State Sequencer" and "Ramping" tools.
- Analyze the effects of harmonic restraint in transformer protection schemes.
- Perform "End-to-End" testing of transmission lines using GPS synchronization.
- Verify the logic of auto-reclosing and synchronism check functions.
- Troubleshoot CT secondary circuit issues and polarity mismatches.
- Interpret COMTRADE files and playback fault records through the CMC set.
- Document protection test results according to international utility standards.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This course is intended for Protection Engineers, Commissioning Engineers, Substation Technicians, and Relay Maintenance Specialists who use OMICRON CMC equipment.
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
