Service (Workover) Rig Operations
| 04 – 08 May 2026, Dubai | 31 Aug. – 04 Sep. 2026, Abu Dhabi |
COURSE OVERVIEW:
This course provides a comprehensive and practical understanding of service (workover) rig operations for oil and gas wells in both onshore and offshore environments. It covers the full sequence of activities from initial planning and mobilisation, through rig up, live well entry, intervention and workover operations, and final rig down and demobilisation. Emphasis is placed on safe, efficient, and technically sound execution of workovers and well servicing tasks to restore or enhance well productivity, maintain integrity, and extend well life.
Participants will review the main types and configurations of service rigs, their equipment and capacities, and how to match the rig to well requirements and work scopes. The course explains typical workover operations, including tubing pulling and running, completion repairs and changes, remedial cementing, sand control and zonal isolation work, fishing and milling, and support to wireline and coiled tubing operations. Practical aspects of work planning, workover programs, rig site procedures, well control, barriers, and simultaneous operations are addressed in detail.
The course uses field-based examples to illustrate common operational challenges such as stuck pipe, parted tubing, poor well control practices, equipment failures, and non-productive time. Best practices in workover program design, job safety analysis, equipment inspection, communication, and supervision are highlighted so that participants can return to their operations better equipped to plan, execute, and supervise service rig activities safely and effectively.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After completion of the course, the participants will be able to:
- Describe the role of service (workover) rigs in the life cycle of an oil or gas well.
- Distinguish between different types and configurations of service rigs and their main components and capabilities.
- Interpret workover and well servicing programs and understand their technical and operational requirements.
- Plan rig mobilization, rig up, and rig down activities in coordination with drilling, production, and logistics teams.
- Identify the key elements of well barrier philosophy and apply safe well entry practices during workover operations.
- Explain the basic principles of well control as applied to service rig operations and identify critical well control equipment.
- Describe typical workover tasks such as tubing pulling and running, packer handling, completion repairs, and recompletion operations.
- Outline the steps and precautions for common remedial operations such as squeeze cementing, sand control interventions, and zonal isolation.
- Recognise the interfaces between service rig operations and wireline, coiled tubing, and pumping services and coordinate activities effectively.
- Apply basic principles of hoisting, handling, and pipe management on service rigs to prevent incidents and equipment damage.
- Identify common problems such as stuck or parted tubing, fishing situations, and equipment malfunctions and describe appropriate responses.
- Implement effective safety practices, work permits, and job safety analyses specific to workover rigs and well servicing sites.
- Use checklists, pre job meetings, and performance indicators to monitor and control service rig operations.
- Review and contribute to the preparation and improvement of workover programs, rig audits, and post-job evaluations.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
- Workover and well service engineers
- Service (workover) rig supervisors, toolpushers, and company men
- Drilling and completion engineers are involved in planning and supervising workovers
- Production engineers and field supervisors are responsible for well performance and interventions
- Rig floor crews, assistant drillers, and operators transitioning into workover roles
- HSE, operations, and integrity personnel involved in rig audits and well intervention assurance
- Technical staff from service companies supporting workover and well servicing operations
TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:
A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material through PowerPoint equipped with necessary animation, learning videos, and general discussions will be provided.
The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.
COURSE CERTIFICATE:
National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants who complete at least 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
