Rig Maintenance Technology

06 – 10 Apr. 2026, Abu Dhabi03 – 07 Aug. 2026, Dubai

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course provides a comprehensive treatment of rig maintenance technology for land and offshore drilling units, focusing on the systematic management of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, marine, and safety systems that are critical to safe and efficient drilling operations. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how maintenance strategies, work processes, and technologies combine to prevent failures, extend equipment life, and support operational integrity and regulatory compliance.

The course covers the full maintenance cycle, from equipment classification and criticality analysis, through preventive and predictive maintenance, inspection and testing, troubleshooting, and failure analysis. It explains how to apply structured maintenance philosophies, implement effective maintenance planning and scheduling, and use computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS) to manage work orders, spares, and maintenance history.

Realistic examples and case studies from jack-up rigs, semi-submersibles, drillships, and land rigs are used to illustrate typical equipment problems, failure modes, and best practice solutions. By the end of the course, participants will be able to participate effectively in rig maintenance planning, evaluate maintenance programs and procedures, and contribute to improving the reliability, safety, and availability of rig equipment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role of maintenance technology in supporting safe and efficient rig operations.
  • Describe the main systems on a modern drilling rig and the maintenance requirements for each system.
  • Distinguish between corrective, preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance strategies and select appropriate approaches for different equipment.
  • Classify rig equipment according to criticality and use this classification to prioritise maintenance activities and resources.
  • Interpret equipment manuals, maintenance plans, and technical drawings to prepare and execute maintenance tasks correctly.
  • Describe the functions and maintenance needs of key drilling systems such as hoisting, rotating, circulation, and well control systems.
  • Outline maintenance requirements for power generation, electrical distribution, drive systems, and emergency power on rigs.
  • Apply basic maintenance principles to marine and jacking systems, dynamic positioning systems, cranes, and lifting appliances.
  • Plan and schedule maintenance using CMMS tools, work orders, checklists, and maintenance history records.
  • Identify and apply appropriate inspection, testing, and calibration methods for critical safety and control systems.
  • Recognise common failure modes in rig equipment and apply basic troubleshooting and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Understand the requirements of classification societies, flag states, and regulatory bodies related to rig maintenance and certification.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities with operations to reduce nonproductive time and minimise risks during maintenance interventions.
  • Use basic reliability indicators and maintenance performance metrics to track improvement and support decision-making.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Rig maintenance engineers and supervisors
  • Mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation technicians working on rigs
  • Drilling engineers and toolpushers involved in planning and supervising rig operations
  • Marine engineers, barge engineers, and offshore installation managers
  • Asset integrity, reliability, and maintenance planning personnel
  • HSE and technical support staff involved in rig audits, inspections, and assurance activities
  • New graduates and engineers transitioning into rig maintenance and integrity roles

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive but practical and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material through PowerPoint equipped with necessary animation, learning videos, and general discussions will be provided.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and after the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants who complete at least 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
