PetroMod Fundamentals

18 – 22 May 2026, Abu Dhabi12 – 16 Oct. 2026, Dubai

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course teaches new users how to run PetroMod petroleum systems modeling software. PetroMod combines seismic information, well data, and geological knowledge to model the evolution of sedimentary basins through time and to predict if, when, and how reservoirs have been charged with hydrocarbons.

Participants will learn the fundamental concepts of petroleum systems and how they are represented in PetroMod. The course will guide them step by step through 1D, 2D, and 3D model creation, including data loading, definition of boundary conditions, model calibration, and analysis of outputs. Although the focus is on PetroMod tools and workflows, strong emphasis is placed on geological understanding, data quality, and consistent interpretation so that participants can build fit-for-purpose models that support exploration and field development decisions.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the basic concepts of petroleum systems and how they are represented in numerical basin models.
  • Describe the key features and components of a petroleum systems model in PetroMod.
  • Import and organize 1D well data in PetroMod, define boundary conditions, and run initial 1D simulations.
  • Calibrate 1D models using temperature, maturity, and pressure data, and interpret the resulting outputs.
  • Build a 2D model from a geological cross-section and understand the structural and stratigraphic framework required.
  • Define PetroMod 2D input data, assign properties, set boundary conditions, and run 2D simulations.
  • Analyze 2D model outputs for migration pathways, charge timing, and trap filling, and perform basic calibration.
  • Create a 3D basin model in PetroMod, including data input, structural framework, and facies definition.
  • Set up 3D model boundary conditions, run simulations, and interpret 3D outputs to assess charge risk and hydrocarbon distribution.
  • Apply basic quality control, documentation, and best practices to manage uncertainties in PetroMod modeling workflows.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Geologists
  • Geoscientists
  • Basin and petroleum systems modelers
  • Exploration geoscientists involved in play and prospect evaluation
  • Subsurface professionals new to PetroMod who require a structured introduction

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures and discussion sessions, as well as case studies, will be managed to maximize the amount and quality of information, knowledge, and experience transfer. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance learning. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
