Nitrogen Injection Application for Reservoir Pressure Maintenance and Enhanced Oil Recovery

27 Apr. – 01 May 2026, Abu Dhabi21 – 25 Sep. 2026, Dubai

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course provides an in-depth understanding of nitrogen injections as a method for reservoir pressure maintenance and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Participants will learn how nitrogen behaves as an injection gas, the thermodynamic and fluid flow principles governing nitrogen displacement, and the engineering workflows required to evaluate and design nitrogen injection projects. Emphasis is placed on selecting candidate reservoirs, identifying reservoir mechanisms, modeling nitrogen displacement, evaluating miscibility conditions, and integrating nitrogen injection techniques into long-term field development strategies.

The course also covers the design of nitrogen generation systems, surface facilities, well injection requirements, reservoir monitoring practices, and performance assessment. Participants will examine practical challenges such as breakthrough management, sweep efficiency, gas handling constraints, well injectivity issues, and operational risks. Case studies from sandstone and carbonate reservoirs demonstrate how nitrogen injection can increase recovery while supporting reservoir pressure and production stability. By the end of this course, participants will be able to evaluate, plan, and optimize nitrogen injection projects within EOR and pressure management programs.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of nitrogen injection for pressure maintenance and EOR.
  • Describe reservoir conditions where nitrogen injection is technically viable.
  • Analyze nitrogen fluid properties and their behavior under reservoir conditions.
  • Evaluate displacement mechanisms, including miscible and immiscible processes.
  • Identify candidate reservoirs through screening criteria and feasibility studies.
  • Understand nitrogen generation technologies and surface facility requirements.
  • Model nitrogen displacement using reservoir simulation tools.
  • Assess injection well design, injectivity, and operational constraints.
  • Evaluate sweep efficiency and breakthrough risks.
  • Integrate nitrogen injection into overall reservoir management strategies.
  • Implement monitoring and surveillance programs for nitrogen injection projects.
  • Analyze economic and operational factors influencing nitrogen EOR success.
  • Identify environmental and safety considerations unique to nitrogen injection.
  • Apply best practices learned from field case studies and global operations.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Reservoir engineers
  • Petroleum and production engineers
  • EOR specialists
  • Field development planners
  • Simulation and modeling engineers
  • Subsurface managers and project teams
  • HSE and operations personnel working with high-pressure gas systems

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80 percent of the total attendance time requirement.
