Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD)

13 – 17 Apr. 2026, Abu Dhabi07 – 11 Sep. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD), an advanced drilling methodology that enables precise control of annular pressure throughout the drilling process. Participants will gain insight into MPD principles, equipment, operating techniques, and engineering workflows that help mitigate drilling hazards, improve wellbore stability, optimize drilling performance, and enhance operational safety.

The course explores MPD applications in narrow operating pressure windows, depleted reservoirs, deepwater environments, and formations prone to kicks and losses. Key topics include pressure control theory, MPD equipment configuration, choke control, real-time monitoring, hydraulics modeling, influx management, wellbore stability considerations, and integration with conventional drilling systems. By the end of the course, participants will understand how MPD supports safer and more efficient drilling operations in complex wells.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental principles of Managed Pressure Drilling.
  • Describe the conditions that require MPD implementation.
  • Identify MPD variants and select the appropriate MPD method.
  • Explain the function of key MPD equipment, including rotating control devices and choke manifolds.
  • Understand pressure control concepts and annular pressure management.
  • Analyze fluid hydraulics and equivalent circulating density behavior under MPD conditions.
  • Monitor and interpret real-time drilling and MPD system data.
  • Identify kick warning signs and manage influxes using MPD methods.
  • Understand the integration of MPD with conventional drilling and well control procedures.
  • Evaluate MPD risks, operational limits, and safety considerations.
  • Plan MPD operations for high-angle, deepwater, and depleted formations.
  • Apply MPD modeling software and engineering calculations.
  • Troubleshoot common MPD operational challenges.
  • Support decision-making with MPD engineering and performance analysis.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Drilling engineers
  • MPD engineers and MPD system operators
  • Well control specialists
  • Rig supervisors and drilling superintendents
  • Directional drilling and well planning engineers
  • Reservoir and production engineers supporting drilling operations
  • HSE professionals involved in drilling and pressure control

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80 percent of the total attendance time requirement.
