Fundamentals Of Oil and Gas Exploration and Drilling

22 – 26 June 2026, Abu Dhabi14 – 18 Sep. 2026, Dubai

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the oil and gas upstream sector, covering the full life cycle from hydrocarbon generation to exploration, appraisal, well planning, and drilling operations. Participants will gain a strong understanding of petroleum geology, reservoir characterization, seismic interpretation, drilling technologies, rig components, well control fundamentals, mud systems, casing design, and operational safety. The course explains how exploration decisions are made, how prospects are evaluated, and how wells are drilled safely and efficiently using modern practices and technologies.

A key focus of the course is bridging theoretical knowledge with real operational workflows used across the industry, including geological modeling, seismic acquisition, well trajectory planning, rig selection, drilling fluid selection, and hazard management. Participants will also learn how drilling data is monitored, how blowout preventers function, and how environmental and regulatory considerations shape exploration projects. By the end of the course, participants will have a strong foundational understanding of how exploration and drilling operations are planned, executed, and controlled in both onshore and offshore environments.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Describe the overall upstream petroleum value chain from exploration to production.
  • Explain the formation, accumulation, and trapping of hydrocarbons.
  • Interpret basic geological and geophysical data used in exploration.
  • Understand seismic survey principles and how seismic data support prospect evaluation.
  • Identify key reservoir properties influencing well performance.
  • Distinguish among exploration, appraisal, and development wells.
  • Describe the types and functions of drilling rigs and major rig components.
  • Explain the purpose and principles of drilling fluids.
  • Understand casing design, cementing operations, and well integrity requirements.
  • Recognize common drilling challenges, such as stuck pipe, kicks, and lost circulation.
  • Understand blowout prevention fundamentals and well control barriers.
  • Interpret basic drilling parameters and rig instrumentation.
  • Apply operational safety concepts relevant to exploration and drilling activities.
  • Understand regulatory, environmental, and HSE considerations in exploration programs.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Newly hired engineers in oil and gas companies
  • Geologists, drilling engineers, and field personnel seeking foundational knowledge
  • Technical staff from other disciplines entering the upstream sector
  • HSE professionals supporting drilling or exploration projects
  • Management and support staff requiring an understanding of exploration and Workflows
  • Professionals preparing for roles in drilling operations or exploration planning

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80 percent of the total attendance time requirement.
