Drilling Fluids Fundamentals and Mud Engineering

02 – 06 Feb. 2026, Dubai23 – 27 Nov. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Drilling mud is one of the most critical components of successful drilling operations, serving multiple essential functions including wellbore stability, cuttings transport, formation pressure control, cooling and lubrication of the drill string, and protection of the formation. This comprehensive course provides participants with an in-depth understanding of drilling fluid systems, their properties, functions, chemistry, and performance in various drilling environments.

The course covers water-based, oil-based, and synthetic-based muds; rheology and hydraulics; solids control equipment; chemical additives; contamination issues; hole-cleaning principles; and advanced fluid technologies used in HPHT, deepwater, and unconventional drilling. Real operational challenges, laboratory testing practices, and field case studies are included to strengthen participants’ decision-making and fluid management capabilities.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental functions and importance of drilling mud.
  • Identify different types of drilling fluids and their applications.
  • Analyse drilling fluid properties and their influence on well performance.
  • Explain rheology, viscosity, and fluid flow behaviour in the wellbore.
  • Select appropriate mud systems for various formations and operational challenges.
  • Describe the role of solids control equipment and mud cleaning principles.
  • Evaluate drilling fluid additives and their chemical functions.
  • Recognise common mud contamination problems and treatment methods.
  • Understand mud hydraulics and ECD management.
  • Apply hole-cleaning principles for vertical, deviated, and horizontal wells.
  • Assess formation damage risks associated with drilling fluids.
  • Implement HSE considerations related to mud handling and disposal.
  • Interpret laboratory test results for drilling mud evaluation.
  • Review operational case studies to enhance mud system selection and performance.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Drilling engineers
  • Mud engineers and fluid specialists
  • Wellsite drilling supervisors
  • Drilling operations personnel
  • Solids control technicians
  • Petroleum and reservoir engineers
  • HSE professionals in drilling operations

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
