Directional and Horizontal Wells

12 – 16 Jan. 2026, Abu Dhabi02 – 06 Nov. 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Directional and horizontal drilling technologies have transformed modern oil and gas field development, enabling operators to maximise reservoir contact, reduce drilling costs, avoid geological hazards, and enhance recovery. This comprehensive course provides participants with a deep understanding of directional well planning, surveying, trajectory control, horizontal well design, bottom hole assembly (BHA) configurations, drilling dynamics, geosteering fundamentals, and operational considerations throughout drilling and completion stages.

The program covers the engineering principles behind deviation control, tool technologies, torque and drag modelling, wellbore stability, MWD and LWD systems, and horizontal drilling challenges such as hole cleaning, extended reach drilling, and dogleg severity management. Real field examples and advanced drilling concepts are integrated to enhance practical understanding and decision-making for complex directional and horizontal well operations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals and applications of directional and horizontal drilling.
  • Interpret directional surveying methods and trajectory measurement techniques.
  • Explain wellbore trajectory types and their operational purposes.
  • Perform basic directional well planning and define target coordinates.
  • Evaluate BHA design and its influence on directional behaviour.
  • Understand the role and operation of MWD and LWD tools in directional drilling.
  • Apply drilling hydraulics, torque, and drag considerations for deviated wells.
  • Identify dogleg severity limitations and manage wellpath smoothness.
  • Recognise hole cleaning challenges in high-angle and horizontal wells.
  • Analyse geosteering techniques for horizontal reservoir development.
  • Understand drilling dynamics challenges including vibration and stick-slip.
  • Evaluate completion design considerations for horizontal wells.
  • Apply risk assessments and best practices to directional and horizontal drilling operations.
  • Learn lessons from field case histories to improve operational performance.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Drilling engineers
  • Wellsite drilling supervisors
  • Drilling operations coordinators
  • MWD and LWD engineers
  • Rig drilling crew and toolpushers
  • Well planners and geosteering staff
  • Petroleum, reservoir, and production engineers are involved in well construction

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
