Tank Repairs, Alterations and Reconstruction Planning (API 653)

27 Apr. – 01 May 2026, Abu Dhabi21 – 25 Sep. 2026, Dubai

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Industrial storage tanks are significant capital investments that require periodic repair and alteration to maintain their structural integrity and operational flexibility. This course provides a comprehensive roadmap for planning and executing major tank works in strict accordance with the API 653 standard. Whether modifying a tank for a new product or repairing localized corrosion damage, engineers must follow rigorous engineering principles to ensure the vessel remains safe for continued service.

The scope of this training involves the detailed engineering requirements for shell repairs, nozzle additions, and the replacement of roof structures. Participants will learn how to develop repair procedures that account for material compatibility, welding requirements, and post-repair testing. We will explore the complex process of tank reconstruction, where an existing tank is dismantled, moved, and rebuilt at a new location, ensuring that all original design tolerances are maintained or improved.

Coverage includes the documentation and quality control processes required to maintain the "certified" status of a tank after major alterations. The curriculum emphasizes the role of the Authorized Tank Inspector in approving repair plans and witnessing final hydrotests. By completing this course, delegates will be able to manage large-scale tank projects with technical precision, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Interpret the requirements of API 653 for repairs, alterations, and reconstruction.
  • Categorize tank modifications as "repairs" or "alterations" under the code.
  • Develop detailed welding procedures and specifications for tank steel.
  • Design shell patch plates and nozzle reinforcements for existing tanks.
  • Manage the dismantling and re-erection of tanks during reconstruction.
  • Supervise the installation of new tank bottoms and annular rings.
  • Evaluate the necessity of Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) for repairs.
  • Plan and execute hydrotesting and alternative leak testing protocols.
  • Conduct non-destructive examination (NDE) of repair welds.
  • Document all repairs and alterations in the permanent tank record.
  • Manage the technical interfaces between owners, contractors, and inspectors.
  • Ensure all work meets the requirements for continued certification.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is designed for Project Engineers, Tank Maintenance Managers, Welding Engineers, Authorized Tank Inspectors, and Construction Supervisors.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
