Infrared Thermography Applications for Inspection

27 Apr. – 01 May 2026, Abu Dhabi27 – 31 July 2026, Abu Dhabi

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Infrared Thermography (IRT) has emerged as a premier non-contact, non-destructive diagnostic tool for identifying thermal anomalies that signify underlying mechanical or electrical defects. This course provides a technical foundation in the physics of infrared radiation and its practical application in industrial inspection environments. Participants will learn how to transition from simply taking thermal "pictures" to performing rigorous thermographic analysis that identifies heat patterns associated with energy loss, insulation failure, and equipment degradation.

The scope of this training addresses a wide range of applications, including electrical switchgear monitoring, mechanical bearing analysis, and the detection of refractory bypass in high-temperature furnaces. We will examine the critical factors that influence measurement accuracy, such as emissivity, reflected temperature, and atmospheric attenuation. The curriculum emphasizes the integration of thermography into a Predictive Maintenance (PdM) framework, allowing for the detection of "hot spots" before they lead to catastrophic equipment failure or unplanned downtime.

Coverage includes the use of thermal imaging for moisture detection in building envelopes and the screening of insulated piping for Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) indicators. Attendees will investigate the technical specifications of modern thermal cameras and learn to interpret complex thermograms using advanced software analysis. By the end of this course, participants will be equipped to conduct professional infrared inspections and generate actionable reports that prioritize maintenance activities based on thermal severity.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the fundamental principles of the electromagnetic spectrum and infrared radiation.
  • Identify the impact of emissivity and reflectivity on the accuracy of thermal readings.
  • Analyze thermal patterns to distinguish between normal operation and equipment defects.
  • Execute professional electrical inspections on breakers, busbars, and transformers.
  • Detect insulation voids and refractory degradation in boilers and process heaters.
  • Utilize thermography for mechanical inspections of motors, bearings, and couplings.
  • Identify potential moisture ingress and heat loss in industrial building envelopes.
  • Select the appropriate infrared camera based on resolution, sensitivity, and temperature range.
  • Apply environmental corrections for distance, humidity, and ambient temperature.
  • Develop a thermographic inspection schedule within a predictive maintenance program.
  • Document thermal anomalies using standardized severity ranking systems.
  • Create comprehensive inspection reports with correlated visual and thermal images.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is designed for Maintenance Technicians, Electrical Engineers, Reliability Specialists, Building Inspectors, and Plant Engineers who wish to utilize thermal imaging for condition monitoring and asset integrity.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximize the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
