API 936 Refractory Inspector Exam Preparation Training

27 Apr. – 01 May 2026, Abu Dhabi21 – 25 Sep. 2026, Dubai

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The API 936 Refractory Inspector Exam Preparation Training is a technical program dedicated to the quality control and inspection of monolithic refractory linings. Refractory materials are essential in high-temperature industrial environments, such as furnaces, reactors, and regenerators, where they provide thermal insulation and protection against erosion and chemical attack. This course focuses on the standards and practices required to ensure these critical materials are installed and maintained correctly to prevent premature failure.

The scope of this training covers the entire refractory lifecycle, from material selection and laboratory testing to installation and post-installation inspection. Participants will delve into the API 936 standard, which provides the criteria for the installation, inspection, and testing of monolithic refractories. The curriculum addresses various application methods, including gunning, casting, and hand-packing, as well as the technical requirements for anchors, reinforcement, and curing processes.

Coverage includes an in-depth examination of physical property testing, such as cold crushing strength, permanent linear change, and density. The training prepares participants for the API 936 certification exam by providing practice tests, reviewing the "Body of Knowledge," and focusing on the inspector's role in verifying compliance with project specifications. By completing this program, attendees will gain the expertise necessary to manage refractory quality, ensuring the long-term reliability and efficiency of high-temperature process equipment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the role and responsibilities of the API 936 Refractory Inspector.
  2. Identify different types of monolithic refractory materials and their uses.
  3. Interpret project specifications and drawings for refractory installations.
  4. Verify the quality of refractory materials through laboratory testing.
  5. Monitor installation techniques, including gunning, casting, and vibration.
  6. Inspect the layout and welding of refractory anchors and supports.
  7. Conduct pre-qualification tests for installation personnel and materials.
  8. Evaluate the results of physical property tests like Cold Crushing Strength.
  9. Inspect for defects such as cracks, voids, and laminations in linings.
  10. Manage the curing and bake-out schedules for new refractory systems.
  11. Perform Hammer Testing to detect delaminations in the lining.
  12. Document inspection findings and laboratory reports for final certification.
  13. Apply the technical requirements of the API 936 Body of Knowledge.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is designed for quality control inspectors, refractory supervisors, maintenance engineers, and NDT technicians who wish to achieve the API 936 certification.

TRAINING COURSE METHODOLOGY:

A highly interactive combination of lectures, discussion sessions, and case studies will be employed to maximise the transfer of information, knowledge, and experience. The course will be intensive, practical, and highly interactive. The sessions will start by raising the most relevant questions and motivating everybody to find the right answers. The attendants will also be encouraged to raise more of their questions and to share in developing the right answers using their analysis and experience. There will also be some indoor experiential activities to enhance the learning experience. Course material will be provided in PowerPoint, with necessary animations, learning videos, and general discussions.

The course participants shall be evaluated before, during, and at the end of the course.

COURSE CERTIFICATE:

National Consultant Centre for Training LLC (NCC) will issue an Attendance Certificate to all participants completing a minimum of 80% of the total attendance time requirement.
