Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Fundamentals of Measurement and Verification (M&V)

  • Understand the importance of M&V in energy efficiency and performance contracts.
  • Learn the principles of energy performance tracking and savings verification.
  • Differentiate between baseline energy use, post-installation energy consumption, and adjusted savings calculations.

2. M&V Protocols and International Standards

  • Apply the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP).
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 50015: Energy Management – M&V.
  • Understand ASHRAE Guideline 14 and DOE Measurement & Verification Guidelines.

3. Energy Performance Indicators (EPIs) and Baseline Development

  • Develop energy baselines using historical data and regression analysis.
  • Calculate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including:
    • Specific Energy Consumption (SEC).
    • Energy Use Intensity (EUI).
    • Normalized Energy Savings.
  • Adjust for weather variations, production changes, and occupancy levels.

4. Data Collection and Energy Monitoring Techniques

  • Utilize real-time metering, smart sensors, and IoT-based monitoring.
  • Conduct manual data logging vs. automated data acquisition.
  • Implement SCADA and Building Management Systems (BMS) for energy tracking.
  • Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and reliability.

5. Statistical and Analytical Methods for M&V

  • Apply regression models, uncertainty analysis, and error quantification.
  • Conduct Measurement & Verification (M&V) uncertainty assessments.
  • Use energy modeling software and data visualization tools.

6. Verification and Reporting of Energy Savings

  • Verify savings through Option A, B, C, and D of IPMVP methodology.
  • Distinguish between measured, stipulated, and calculated savings approaches.
  • Prepare M&V reports for energy service contracts and regulatory compliance.

7. M&V for Energy Performance Contracts (EPCs) and Carbon Reporting

  • Develop M&V plans for ESCO projects and performance-based contracts.
  • Integrate M&V with carbon footprint reduction strategies.
  • Report savings for green building certifications (LEED, BREEAM, NABERS, etc.).

8. Case Studies and Practical Applications

  • Analyze real-world M&V projects and best practices.
  • Conduct hands-on exercises in data analysis and savings verification.
  • Develop a customized M&V plan for an energy efficiency project.
