Carry out Work Handovers (HSE Critical)
16 – 20 June 2025 | Abu Dhabi | 21 – 25 July 2025 | Dubai | 08 – 12 Dec. 2025 | Abu Dhabi |
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Importance of HSE-Critical Work Handovers
- Understand the role of effective handovers in maintaining operational safety.
- Identify key risks associated with poor handovers (human errors, miscommunication, loss of critical information, operational failures).
- Recognize high-risk industries where structured handovers are essential (oil & gas, chemicals, power plants, construction, offshore platforms, etc.).
2. Principles of Effective Work Handovers
- Implement the 5C Model (Clarity, Continuity, Consistency, Communication, and Control) for handovers.
- Identify essential information that must be communicated (work status, outstanding issues, safety concerns, operational risks, and next steps).
- Utilize structured handover templates and standardized formats.
3. Shift Handover Procedures
- Conduct pre-handover briefings and verification of work progress.
- Implement face-to-face handovers, logbook updates, and digital reporting tools.
- Manage handover challenges in multi-disciplinary and multi-location teams.
4. HSE-Critical Task Handover Requirements
- Identify tasks that require enhanced HSE handovers (confined space entry, work at height, high-voltage operations, hazardous material handling, hot work, process isolations, etc.).
- Ensure handover compliance with Permit to Work (PTW), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and Risk Assessment (RA) procedures.
- Confirm equipment conditions, PPE requirements, and emergency preparedness measures.
5. Communication and Documentation in Work Handovers
- Use structured communication methods (SBAR: Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation).
- Maintain accurate logs, checklists, and electronic handover systems.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 45001, OSHA, API RP 755, and other industry HSE standards.
6. Troubleshooting and Risk Mitigation in Work Handovers
- Identify common pitfalls in work handovers (incomplete information, assumptions, distractions, language barriers, time pressure, fatigue).
- Implement active listening and questioning techniques to confirm understanding.
- Use incident case studies to reinforce best practices in handovers.
7. Emergency and Incident Handover Procedures
- Develop handover protocols for ongoing incidents and high-risk work environments.
- Implement crisis communication strategies during emergency transitions.
- Coordinate handover roles with HSE, operations, and emergency response teams.
8. Case Studies and Practical Applications
- Analyze real-world incidents caused by poor work handovers and lessons learned.
- Participate in hands-on role-playing exercises and simulation-based handovers.
- Develop a customized HSE work handover plan for your workplace.
